Welcome to the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center at East Carolina University. As part of the Department of Intercultural Affairs within Student Involvement and Leadership at ECU, the Peel LGBTQ Center works in conjunction with our colleagues in the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, the Military & Veterans Resource Center, and the Women and Gender Office to cultivate a transformative and culturally competent community centered in intercultural learning. We strive to foster understanding and acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. The Peel LGBTQ Center works each day to develop tomorrow’s leaders to serve and inspire positive change.

Since our founding in 2011, we have served the entire ECU campus. Our Center is located in Suite 209 in the Main Campus Student Center and we are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our resources include: a lending library; information on campus, local, and national resources; and two computer workstations, in addition to a social area, a conference room, and offices for our staff. Throughout the year, we offer educational programs and events, and participate in national campaigns such as National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, Bisexual Awareness Week, Asexual Awareness Week, and Transgender Day of Visibility.  We invite you to visit the Peel LGBTQ Center–everyone is always welcome!

Lavender Launch 2024

Thursday, May 2 at 5:30 pm in the Black Box Theater

Our Lavender Launch ceremony was created in 2012 to honor our LGBTQ and Ally graduates. We come together with family, friends, faculty, and staff to celebrate this landmark moment in any student’s life. The evening includes a keynote speech, the presentation of the Samantha Hamilton Award for LGBTQA Leadership Excellence (presented to a student) and the Community Impact Award (presented to an ECU faculty or staff or to a community member) and, most importantly, the presentation of our graduates. Dinner follows the ceremony.

RSVP here.

Upcoming Safe Zone Trainings

Safe Zone is an opportunity for ECU faculty and staff to talk, learn, and ask questions about sexuality and gender in a non-judgmental, safe, educational environment. The purpose of Safe Zone is to create a network of allies who are willing to talk to students about sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, in addition to demonstrating their support of the LGBTQ community by displaying the Safe Zone symbol. Each session is three hours in length and includes a panel of students who share their experiences as members of the LGBTQ community on campus.

Once you have completed the training, you will receive a Safe Zone logo to display in your office. The Safe Zone program is a symbol of this University’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness and your participation in the Safe Zone training helps to create an ever-expanding network within the ECU community to support our students.

Registration on Cornerstone is now open for the following session:

  • Wednesday, May 22 from 9 am to Noon in the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center (Suite 209 in the Main Campus Student Center)
  • Monday, June 24 from Noon to 3 pm in Laupus Library room 1504
